About Waterford Institute of Technology

Established in 1970, Waterford Institute of Technology is the largest of the Irish Institutes of Technology outside of Dublin and is generally regarded as the most innovative and progressive institution. The range of academic programmes is very wide covering Humanities, Health, Science and Information, Engineering, Business and Education.  All WIT awards are included in the Irish national framework of qualifications maintained by the national Qualifications Authority of Ireland. The Irish legislation states that degrees from Institutes of Technology are equal to those from Universities. The main difference between the degrees from Institutes and those from Universities in Ireland are: ü Course content in Institutes tends to be more vocational ü There is a higher emphasis on practical competence ü The inclusion of industry or work placement in most coursesThese factors lead to a high level of employability of Institute graduates. Being the sole provider of higher education in the South East region of Ireland, WIT has developed differently from many of the other Institutes of Technology in Ireland. Firstly the number of third-level students is the highest in the sector (excluding DIT).The current full-time student cohort numbers 6,400 and the part-time cohort number 3,400. WIT has responded to the needs of many different categories of learners by developing expertise in the areas of flexible accreditation, outreach and flexible delivery modes. With regard to physical resources to support its learners, WIT has developed on four campuses in the city. There are a thriving research and postgraduate community of over 500 students and researchers in WIT. Many of the researchers have a high profile in both the national and EU community of academics. Providing a caring and supportive learning environment for its students is central to WIT’s ethos. WIT is located at Waterford City (Fifth biggest city) in the South East of Ireland, a beautiful fertile region of rivers, valleys and a long and scenic coastline. It is easily accessible from Dublin, Cork and other European countries.
