About University of Florence

The University of Florence has roots going back to the Studium Florentinum (Florentine Republic, 1321) and acquired its current name in 1923. It has 21 Departments (9 of them “excellent”) in 5 areas: 1) Biomedical; 2) Scientific; 3) Technological; 4) Social Sciences; 5) Humanities & Education. It has over 53000 Students, 8% of them foreign; 1650 Professors, 1800 Researchers and PhD students, 1600 technical and administrative staff. The University of Firenze fosters cooperation with academic and research institutions all over the world and welcomes foreign teaching staff, researchers and students to promote cultural and scientific internationalization. It has over 440 international cooperation agreements with foreign universities in 80 different countries, and offers 150 extra EU grants each year for UNIFI students to study outside Europe (for their exams and thesis). Also, many Extra EU exchange students come to Firenze (some are financed). The University of Firenze hosts two Unesco chairs: «Human Development and Peace Culture” (Transdisciplinary) & “Prevention and Sustainable Management of Geo-hydrological Hazard" and hosts a world leading University museum System. It is also one of the most active Italian universities in term of projects and related grants within the Technology Research and Development Framework of the European Union.
